Wisconsin State Contractor License Regulations

Construction work in the State of Wisconsin is regulated by the State. Most residential builders must have a state credential. All contractors must pass the OSHA exam. To inquire if a contractor has the necessary credentials, call (608) 261-8500 or click here.  To file a permit for a one or two family dwelling you must have a credential. You will need to post a $25,000 bond or document $250,000 of liability insurance.  To apply for the credential, contact Department of Commerce, Safety and Buildings Division:  (608) 261-8500. There is a $40 credential fee, and a $10 fee to file the application for the credential.  Information on specific requirements for worker's compensation and how to obtain worker's compensation insurance or become self-insured can be found at the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, 608-266-1340.  Nonresident contractors must file a surety bond with the Department of Revenue for 3% of any contract of $50,000 or more.
